On the Faculty

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (Fakultas Ilmu Budaya – FIB) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) was founded just one year after Indonesia’s independence. It was officially founded on March 3rd, 1946, with the Faculty of Letters, Philosophy, and Culture as its first name. During it course of development, the faculty has changed its name for six times, i.e. Faculty of Letters, Philosophy, and Culture (1949), Faculty of Letters and Philosophy (1950), Faculty of Letters and Pedagogy (1955), Faculty of Letters and Culture (1982), Faculty of Letters (2001), and Faculty of Cultural Sciences (present).

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, which is one of 18 faculties at UGM, is located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta which has been widely known as the center of Javanese culture and the center of education. It is also known as Indonesian major tourist destination following Bali. For more than six years FIB UGM has made a great progress in improving it national and international reputation and in demonstrating its commitment to generate high quality education of undergraduate and graduate programs.

FIB UGM conducts education, research, and community services on the basis of cultural paradigm, which is highly significant since from cultural and historical viewpoint Indonesia is a unified nation of highly pluralistic communities. This paradigm constitutes the core of the faculty’s mission with it eleven undergraduate program, six master programs, and two doctorate programs. One of its undergraduate programs is Tourism Studies Program which comprises of two programs, namely regular and international undergraduate programs.

FIB is special to Universitas Gadjah Mada and other universities in Indonesia it represents the gate through which international students first come in order to learn the Indonesian language and culture. Every year, more than 400 international students come to the faculty to learn them. Besides, more than 700 new students coming from all regions of Indonesia and abroad join the study programs offered by the faculty. It has generated a lot of students into skilled experts, professional lecturers and researchers, scholars, masters, and Ph.Ds who are ready to compete at national, regional, and international levels.

A continuing effort to improve the quality of academic activity in FIB UGM has been made in line with the implementation of Academic Quality Assurance System at Universitas Gadjah Mada. day-to-day academic activities at FIB UGM administered by the Academic and Student Affairs Division.

Research projects are mostly conducted by the teaching staff, either in individual or joint research. Research funds of various types and qualifications may come from the Directorate of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture and other parties, either government or private and business institutions.

In public services, FIB UGM offers a wide range of services to the public, which are organized by the Faculty Research, Training, and Public Service Unit as well as the departments at the faculty. Many institutions in government and public sectors have already experienced the benefit of FIB activities in public services.

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, is to be an internationally recognized and respected education and research institution through academic programs and activities in the humanities with the spirit of Indonesian ideology, Pancasila.

Faculty’s Mission

  1. To provide a high quality and competitive education, both at the national and international levels.
  2. To promote aesthetic and cultural awareness and diversity of students, the campus, and the community through a variety of local and global collaborations, events, and activities.
  3. To promote high moral standards, lofty principles, innovative thinking, leadership, and interest in humanitarian matters, which allow them to take part in the race for the nation’s superiority.
  4. To promote research in the field of culture, which supports advancement in education, science, technology, and art, beneficial to the state and the human race.
  5. To increase the level of public services in the field of culture to give solutions for problems concerning humanity.
  6. To establish a network with other parties nationwide and worldwide in the field of culture to promote education, research, and public services.
  7. To perform a sustainable, high quality, and accountable organization and management of FIB UGM relevant to the course of development.

Aims & Objectives

In general terms, the program aims at preparing students to acquire the following characteristics:

  1. Loyalty to Pancasila and having high personal integrity.
  2. Open-mindedness and responsiveness to change and advancement in knowledge and technology , as well as sensitivity to problems faced by the public.
  3. Ability to apply their knowledge and skills in productive activities and public services.
  4. Mastering basic principles of knowledge as well as the knowledge and methodology of the related field in order to be able to identify, comprehend, describe, and formulate solutions to problems faced by the public.
  5. Mastering basic principles of knowledge in order to be able to think, act, and take action in the capacity of a scientist.
